Louisville - Rock & Roll hotspot

Louisville has a minor history of supporting live music - in the old days (I've only lived here for 14 years, so the old days is '95 - '99) there was a bar called Pasquale's that had live bands all the time, mostly blues and bluegrass. After the owner of Pasquale's sold the place so that he could become a full-time roady for his favorite band, there was a bit of a lull. The same spot later became the Druid Arms, owned by a family from Ireland that had a serious commitment to live music and drunken support thereof. I suspect their commitment to sound business practices wasn't as strong, and the place eventually went out of business.

Starting three or four years ago, downtown Louisville began hosting summertime Friday night street parties, with live music. Originally the music was supplied by minor local musical acts (the 12 piece marimba band was a favorite of mine), but each year the lineup becomes more well-known. The focus seems to be on aging bands that at one time were national in scope. Poco, Firefall, It's a Beautiful Day, and Pure Priarie League have all become regulars.

A year ago, the Pasquale's site became Waterloo Icehouse, part of an Austin based chain of restaurant/venues which focus on texas/honkytonk music. The Icehouse is celebrating it's 1 year anniversary on Labor Day with an outdoor party featuring Joe Ely and Junior Brown. For me, this represents the apex of live music in Louisville. Joe Ely is one of my favorites, a true honky-tonker with enough credibility to have opened for the Clash on their London Calling tour. Junior Brown has a great reputation too.
